The TAS Jazz Ensemble
The TAS Jazz Ensemble is honored to perform at the Taiwan Clinic.
Our band members are high school students in grades 9-12.
The TAS Jazz Ensemble is a regular class scheduled during the day (80 minutes, every other day). Jazz students are tested and given grades like any other academic class.
Some students are new members, but most have been in the band for two to four years.
This school year the big band has performed at the following events:
* International Jazz Exchange hosted by TAS (September 2012)
* Taichung International Jazz Festival (October)
* TAS Winter Concert (November)
* Red House Concert Hall (December)
Our advanced combos also performed at the Grand Hyatt's Christmas celebration and for Australia Day at the Far Eastern Plaza Hotel.
Conductor Ray Heberer
Music educator and performer Ray Heberer III has directed the Taipei American School (TAS) Jazz Ensemble since 1996. He also plays 1st Trombone with the Taipei Jazz Orchestra.
Prior to teaching at TAS Ray Heberer was Principal Bass Trombone with the Taiwan National Symphony Orchestra. He also taught Trombone, Jazz and Brass Choir classes at Soo Chow University and China Culture University. His talented former students include Sung Kuang-Ching, Dr. Hou Chih-Cheng , Ou Chang-Che, Wang Shm-Ming and others. Many of his students have studied at prestigious universities including Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, Oberlin, North Texas, etc.
A versatile performer, Mr. Heberer has performed as a classical and jazz soloist on alto, tenor and bass trombone at the International Trombone Convention, Taiwan's National Concert Hall, Cultural Center of the Philippines and numerous other locations on five continents.
Mr. Heberer earned his Master of Music degree in Trombone Performance with honors from the University of Northern Colorado, where he studied with Buddy Baker (Trombone & Euphonium) and Dr. Gene Aitken (Jazz Pedagogy). As a student he won DownBeat Music awards for Best Classical Soloist in the USA & Canada, and as a member of the DownBeat award winning UNC Vocal Jazz 1 and UNC Jazz Lab Band 1.
His jazz groups have performed at relief events in Nantou County ("921" Earthquake), Thailand (2005 Tsunami) and northern Japan ("311" Earthquake & Tsunami), as well as numerous charity events in Taipei.
